Nursing is a very intense yet rewarding profession. Nurses at times are referred to as angels of light, providing holistic care to ill patients and their families. Already a Licensed practical nurse, I have been exposed to the disease process and the many different ways of caring for those compromised by sicknesses. In order to improve my understanding and knowledge of the disease process, in order to improve the quality of life for my patients, myself, and my son I have made the decision to return back to school.
In 2009 I made a sacrifice in my life, I decided I would leave my job and go to school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, it was a scary and an exciting feeling at the same time. I didn’t know what to expect from the school, but I knew that I was leaving that school an LPN. I completed my year at Lincoln Technical Institute and began working at a clinic in Brooklyn shortly after taking my boards. I was very grateful, being that I just graduated from school, with no experience, I was considered for a position at the HIP center. In my four years of working there I gained experience in internal medicine, pediatrics, gyn and ophthalmology. I also had the opportunity to provide maximum health services to my patients in such a way that all my patients left satisfied, and happy. It is such a gratifying feeling to know that I have assisted my patients in every way possible.
I thought I was satisfied with my LPN license, until one morning my grand father was struck by a brain aneurysm. He was in the hospital for weeks, and every day I went there I saw that he was taken care of by exceptional Registered Nurses. They were pleasant, they were
competent, and they worked to the best of their ability making sure that my father would recover and leave that hospital alive. My grandfather was admitted into the neuro ICU. He was intubated with tubes coming out of every area of his body. The nurses worked efficiently showing no intimidation. Many times they had to be autonomist, often initiating their own plan of care. I watched them advocate for my grandfather with the doctors and multiple disciplinary teams. I admired the Registered Nurses as they did their jobs, with no restrictions. I realized that as an
LPN my job was limited, the tasks that these nurses performed, I would never be able to do at my nursing level. It has been a month since my grandfather’s illness. Because of God’s blessing and the caring and empathetic hands of the nurses he has regained his life back. At that very moment I just knew I had to further my education and become a Registered Nurse. I am proud of my LPN license, but I wanted more, in order for me to be able to do more for my patients I would have to seek higher education.
The next morning I researched nursing schools and found Jersey College. I immediately filled out an application and sent it out, shortly after that I received a phone call for an interview.
Again, I had to make a sacrifice, this time this sacrifice was bigger because I now have a one year old son. I was torn between the decision of staying at my job, versus going back to school for an advance in my education and for my son. I realized that in life you must make sacrifices to get more, so I decided to go back to school, and except the challenge of attending Jersey College.
I thank God for the supportive family that I have that encouraged me not to worry because they will give me the help and support I will need to make it through.
I am a single mother raising a young boy in America as we are well aware by statistics, the news and our daily living our young children show less value to education and the respect to
life. By being well educated, i cannot only be an example to my son, I will also have the means to raise him with much pride, and be able to provide a secure financial environment for him
This is also a stepping stone to improve my life, and gives me the chance to provide a better life for my son, going back to school is not easy, but I can set an example for my son, and show him that with courage, hard work and sacrifice anything is possible.
Last but not least another reason for trying to achieve this milestone is for personal gain. I have always envisioned myself in a profession that is very rewarding and self fulfilling. I will be able to wake up each and every day holding my head high and proud knowing that I can be the best, and I have done the best to provide great quality of life for my patients, myself and others.
While attending Jersey College, I expect to obtain a vast knowledge and understanding of the various subjects such as human physiology, pharmacology, nursing methodology and more. I anticipate the opportunity to explore nursing beyond the classroom with experiences at different hospitals, facilities and clinical sites. Since sickness will never be eradicated, there will always be a great demand for skilled nursing professionals. With the education that I will gain from
Jersey College, I will embrace this opportunity of taking care of the sick with no fear and hesitancy. After I graduate from Jersey College, I will like to move on and work on my Bachelors degree, then to my Masters degree, and hopefully push for the Nurse Practitioner. I look forward to the open doors that this degree will have for offer. As a Nurse Practitioner I can open my own practice and serve to a community.
