They cannot be on the same level as our protagonists because they are reflective of what is wrong with the community. Therefore, they are depicted in a negative light using comedic tactics. Big Worm is a parody of drug dealers. While drug dealers are known to be “tough” looking, Big Worm is a fat man either driving a bright colored vehicle with curlers in his hair or driving an ice cream truck with an unusually large perm. There is absolutely nothing threatening when looking at the character of Big Worm yet he is one of the most feared people in the neighborhood. Deebo, on the other hand, is depicted as brawn but…

I attended Ketchum High School in Ketchum, Oklahoma. My school’s mission statement was: “Educating all students in a safe, positive environment through rigorous standards to develop productive members of society. Through accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, data driven decisions, equity, high expectations, and integrity.” One example of my school’s athletic department supporting this statement is through accountability. My basketball coach would find out each of his players’ schedules and have a meeting every two weeks with their teachers. He would access their grades and their behavior throughout class, and would either congratulate you or punish you depending on the answer he was given. Another example of supporting this…

Having attended a Catholic High School, while not being Catholic has opened many doors for me. I got to experience another religion, while learning about its origins, beliefs, and contributions to the world. Growing up in a Sikh family, I had always been taught to respect human life, work hard, give back, and remember God; a lot of these same aspects were reiterated in school, engraining them in my everyday life. One of the main concepts I took away from my high school was the concept of education hearts and minds, which in my mind resonates highly with the mission of Pepperdine. The main aspect behind educating hearts and minds is that while education in the purest sense is very important, equally important is how we go…

The early school morning of April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School seemed liked any other. That is, until Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on fellow students at 11:19 a.m. The following hour resulted in one of the first major mass shootings in the U.S., leaving twelve students and one teacher dead, as well as 21 injured. This horrifying shooting sparked the beginning of a long and grueling debate on gun control. Should civilians be able to buy automatic weapons? What about high-capacity ammunition clips? Are guns helpful at all? Such questions have arisen after every new account of a shooting, which seem to occur quite often based on their prevalent coverage on mainstream media outlets. Furthermore, with such strong stances on pro-…

Be the teacher I would want my own child to have. This was my motivation and driving force throughout my entire studies at Walden University. I can stand before you today and say with one hundred percent certainty that I am now the teacher that I would want my own child to have. As I began my journey with the Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, one of our first assignments was to read the college’s mission. As I read the mission, I remember wondering how an online program was going to prepare me to become a teacher who inspires and influences my students. I now understand that Walden University gave me the tools and knowledge to look deep within myself and my own teaching. Those tools have helped me become that teacher who is able to inspire and influence students.…
