The hamburger method will always be useful in writing the writing expectations increase as one moves higher up the academic ladder. As I move through academia; learning how to write during my undergraduate degree was another process entirely. Writing during this time became more difficult and the expectations in writing increased. The only writing instruction I recall was to keep an eye on “picayune” details while writing and editing my work. During my undergraduate degree I recall learning to write in APA format. According to Hacker (2003). APA format is a system of writing that specifically addresses the way in which the social sciences are communicated. (p. 381) Learning to write in APA style was not taught to me in a specific way, such as an instructor explaining the way in which quotes, references, and layout of a paper is to be constructed. Instead, APA style was demonstrated through literature that I read and corrections made to my papers from instructors through feedback. One was written to demonstrate a process of learning that involved instruction, the other paper a personal experience that involved application of something I had learned. During the construction of these papers I learned that relaying information and how that information is relayed through writing can be extremely diverse. The paper that involved instruction was completely objective and had no words of personal relation to myself, the author. It relayed information that was instructed in a step-by-step manner with specific emphasis on objectivity. The paper that involved my personal experience was peppered with subjective information that was relative to the author, myself. My voice was evident throughout the paper and the effect was quite different than the instructional paper. While writing these papers I did not learn any mechanical processes of how to write a paper, but instead learned the diversity and expectation that different audiences require in order to effectively receive information that is contingent on how a paper is written.
