My Writing Process
Writing academic papers, personal letters, journals or simple notes take a certain amount of thought, syntax and skill. Writing is taught when we are young, often during our first years at school. Instructors teach us the formulas for properly constructing a well-written sentence, paragraph and eventually a paper. These skills amass over time and are put to use in an array of circumstances throughout our lives, but do we know exactly where, how and who taught us to write?

As I move through academia; learning how to write during my undergraduate degree was another process entirely. Writing during this time became more difficult and the expectations in writing increased. Instead, APA style was demonstrated through literature that I read and corrections made to my papers from instructors through feedback. I also referenced the APA manual, which I found useful for the application of the mechanical protocol for writing in this …show more content…
One was written to demonstrate a process of learning that involved instruction, the other paper a personal experience that involved application of something I had learned. During the construction of these papers I learned that relaying information and how that information is relayed through writing can be extremely diverse. The paper that involved instruction was completely objective and had no words of personal relation to myself, the author. It relayed information that was instructed in a step-by-step manner with specific emphasis on objectivity. The paper that involved my personal experience was peppered with subjective information that was relative to the author, myself. My voice was evident throughout the paper and the effect was quite different than the instructional paper. While writing these papers I did not learn any mechanical processes of how to write a paper, but instead learned the diversity and expectation that different audiences require in order to effectively receive information that is contingent on how a paper is written. In other words it was important to consider the audience and purpose of the

In “Cognition, Convention, and Certainty: What We Need to Know Writing” the author Patricia Bizzell explains what we need to know about writing. Initially, Bizzell states that that there is a “writing problem”. She says that we are just now realizing that it is actually a thinking problem where we used to take student thinking for granted. The author then explains that there are two opposing theoretical camps that see writing differently. The first camp sees writing as inner-directed which focusses on the structure of language-learning and thinking process prior to social influence.…

In addition to spacing, APA style includes a special way of citing resource articles. See the APA manual for specifics regarding in-text citations. The APA manual also discusses the desired tone of writing, grammar, punctuation, formatting for numbers, and a variety of other important topics. Although the APA style rules are used in this template, the purpose of the template is only to demonstrate spacing and the general parts of the paper. The student will need to refer to the APA manual for other format directions. GCU has prepared an APA Style Guide available in the Student Writing Center for additional help in correctly formatting according to APA style.…

My writing process all depends on what I am writing. Some writings I can sit down and write the whole things and be done with it, while others can take me multiple days or even weeks. I normally sit down and work on it until I finish, get tired of it, or a hit a roadblock. I try to stop when I feel like I am writing the same thing over and over or if I feel like I just need a break. Most of the time, if I feel like I am writing and it is really bad, it is because it is and I need to take a break and come back to it later. Working on it in pieces normally works well for me, to break it up and take it a little bit at a time. I normally struggle when I do not like what I am writing about or when I run out of information to put in my writing. I…
