Was it right that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources cut Chinook Salmon stockings by almost 70% in Lake Michigan?…
The Red Cedar River is home to many interesting and unique species of organisms, including crayfish. Crayfish play a significant role in the ecosystem by serving as a food source to different organisms. By studying the factors that influence the amount of crayfish in a freshwater environment, researchers can discover more about how ecosystems persist. The overpopulation of crayfish in freshwater systems can lead to various negative impacts, such as the feeding on plants that are major food sources for different aquatic organisms and the eating of fish eggs leading to the decrease in population sizes. If there is evidence proving a positive correlation between phosphorus concentration, a chemical element that can enter water through waste or…
In America there is a number of invasive species but the one I chose the Brown trout. The Brown trout is a european species of the salmonid fish family. The Brown Trout’s scientific name is Salmo trutta. It was introduced in the mid 1800’s to america. The reason why the Brown trout is an invasive is because the Brown trout competes with other native species of fish(and obviously wins) and in some cases end up breeding with them. This has conservationist worried about the genetic makeup of the native species.…

the students will be working in partners to create a painting from the book “What’s It Like to be a Fish?” by Wendy Pfeffer to express their definition of what is it to be a fish and live in the ocean. The students will be required to fully express their understanding of what it is to live in the ocean based on the book.…
“I like children, they are tasty(Fish)”. Albert was a serial killer. A serial killer is someone who has committed multiple murders. It takes a lot to be a cannibal and Fish was one of them. Cannibal is the act or practice of humans eating the flesh or internal organs of other human beings(Maria). Albert Fish’s crazy life included his childhood, into adulthood as a serial killer, and his death…
In the Pacific Northwest, salmon are an incredibly important part of the ecosystem. Their presence indicates the health of rivers and there are over 100 species that depend on salmon as a source of food (Rahr). As salmon move from saltwater systems into freshwater systems again, they bring essential nutrients with them. These nutrients are put back into the ecosystem when the salmon are consumed and when their bodies start to decompose. Many of these nutrients even make their way back into the forest when bears drag the bodies of their prey away from the river (Rahr). The cycling of nutrients is essential when it comes to the health of forests and rivers. Besides improving the overall health of the ecosystems that they are a part of, salmon…
Many people may not know that seahorses are a type of fish. Their scientific name is Hippocampus, Hippo which means “horse and campus meaning sea monster. Seahorses average life span in the wild is about 1 to 5 years and they range from size 0.6 in to 14 in. Seahorses are very slow, they have a top speed of about 5 feet per hour (3). Seahorses are found in shallow areas, near the coral reefs, seagrass beds etc. They swim by using small fins on their back and behind their heads. Seahorses are the only species on earth where the male gives birth (3). Although, they don’t physically look like a fish they share some characteristics with them. These characteristics can be found in the following, digestive system, circulatory system, and nervous system.…
Pipefish are sub families of small fishes which together with the seahorses and sea dragons from the Syngnathidea family. There are 200+ recognized species of a pipefish but they are frequently overlooked either because they are incompatible or get overshadow by the seahorse. My topic is the tiger pipe fish. The Tiger Pipefish can be recognized by its color. The species grows to 35 centimeters in length and it lives in Australia. It occurs from southern Queensland to central New South Wales and from the central to north-western coasts of Western Australia. I decided to choose this species because pipefish are unique to me and stunning and many pipefish make looking like that a hobby get overlooked but some have specialized requirements and don’t do well. When…

When it comes to the animal kingdom, it has long been established that each species has a role to play. However, not every critter can be as adorable as a red panda or as awe-inspiring as a Bengal tiger. While beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, it's hard to deny that some animals have really drawn the short end of the stick when it comes to looks. Here are the five ugliest animals in the world!…

“Take This Fish and Look at it*” by Samuel H. Scudder is the most compelling essay for this week’s reading assignment because the author wrote in an organized, laughable tone; therefore, allowing its audience to perceive the lesson as the professor intended it to be learned. Likewise, Scudder used three different apparent modes in his essay, these include: comparison / contrast, narrative, and description. I particularly liked this essay because it relates to the great significance that in every scenario, even writing, that things can be overlooked and need to be re-examined to find better, more sufficient details. Scudder also uses humor throughout his narrative, which compared to some essays, is quite enjoyable. Overall, every individual…
The Atlantic Ocean is an underwater world connected to gulfs and seas where various species of fish swim. Just off the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico, it is the middle of April at the start of the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna breeding season. A female Bluefin returns to the same spawning grounds every year to lay eggs in the warm waters of the gulf. She is eight years old and it is her first breeding season. In the dead of night, she and her male partner will swim side by side as she lays 10+ million eggs, but these eggs have a slim chance of surviving. How slim? A one in 40 million chance of survival.…
There are many causes to the over population of jellyfish. One of the origins is pollution. When the earth is polluted it increases the number of dead zones. Zooplankton thrive in these dead zones; jellyfish also thrive on zooplankton. When there is a higher population of zooplankton, jellyfish can become bigger and in a larger population. Another cause for the spread of jellyfish is over fishing, when there is less fish that eat jelly fish, it causes their population to grow. Another problem is the warming ocean, when the water warms the jellyfish are enabled to move into new areas.…
