Shoulsd Violent Videogames Be Banned
By Mr Satler

If you were God for a day, what would you do?

Should violent video games be banned?

97% of 12-17 year olds in the US played video games in 2008, thus fueling an $11.7 billion domestic video game industry. In 2008, 10 of the top 20 bestselling video games in the US contained violence.

Violent video games have been blamed for school shootings, increases in bullying, and violence towards women. Critics argue that these games desensitize players to violence, reward players for simulating violence, and teach children that violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflicts.

The controversy over violent video games resurfaced following the massacre of 13 people at Columbine High School in Jefferson County, CO on Apr. 20, 1999. The two teenage shooters were revealed to be avid players of weapon-based combat games Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Following the shooting, 176 newspaper articles across the country focused on the allegation that video games were the cause of the tragedy.

Within hours of the Virginia Tech shooting on Apr. 16, 2007, attorney and anti-game activist Jack Thompson appeared on Fox News to blame the tragedy on the violent game CounterStrike. Other high-profile figures such as television host Dr. Phil McGraw and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney argued that video games were to blame for the shooting. However, it was later revealed by the Virginia Tech Review Panel that the shooter did not play video games.

Critics of violent video games argue that playing violent games desensitizes players to real-life violence and is responsible for the increasing rates of bullying. In 2007, 32% of students aged 12-18 reported being bullied at school, compared to 5% in 1999. Some researchers are concerned that violent video games teach children that violence is an acceptable approach to solving conflicts and achieving goals.

Defenders of violent video games argue that the research has failed to show a causal link between video games and realworld violence. They argue that correlations between video games and violent behavior can be explained by youth predisposed to violence being attracted to violent entertainment. Additionally, if video games do cause youth to be violent, then one would expect juvenile violent crime to increase as more youth play violent video games. Instead, the arrest rate for juvenile violent crimes has fallen 49.3% between 1995 and 2008, while video game sales have quadrupled in the same period.

Gamers may imitate violent maneuvers practiced in a violent video game. Researchers from Saint Leo University, in Florida, told the American Psychological Association’s 2005 annual conference that young people who played violent video games — even for a short period — showed an increase in aggressive behavior afterwards. They said that players of violent video games "tend to imitate the moves that they just acted out in the game they played". They found that children who play violent karate games on screen may then use the same behavior when playing with friends.

Studies suggests that kids who are more immersed in violent video games may be more likely to get into physical fights, argue with teachers, or display anger and hostility. Violent video games may desensitize gamers to violence, making it more emotionally conceivable to perform violence Studies that draw the conclusion that exposure to violent video games results in poor academic achievement

Many researchers conclude that there is no causal link between violent video games and aggressive behavior. The new study found that players' exposure to a highly violent online games did not cause any substantial real-world aggression Even if video games might create violent thoughts, there is no reason for these thoughts to display themselves in action more than the aggressive thoughts caused by frustration in non-violent video games.

Violent games act more as a type of catharsis, allowing people with aggressive feelings to vent them in the game rather than in real life. While violent gameplay among youth has increased, youth crime rates have fallen, weakening the causal link between violent game play and violence. Video games are a useful outlet for childhood aggression. Play violence has always been a natural part of growing up, especially for boys.

Dr. Strasburger from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine says that there were normally four factors that applied to school shooters. One, they had been abused or bullied. These games do influence human behavior, which is not always positive, but this does not mean that they should be banned. If a child began playing violent video games at a young age, then he might think that violence in real life is the same as the game violence and that it does not have a real impact on others. This was yet another story in which the media could seek their teeth in and blame it on video games. To this day it is still not proven that these two students were influenced by video games. After the shootings the police found the journals of the two perpetrators and found out that the result of the shooting was due to them being social outcasts and bullying form the other students. Even with these hard facts pointing towards different influences leading to the columbine shooting the news and congress still blame video games and wish to ban them from people’s homes. According to a small article on the “American Psychological Association” website it comes to prove how video games can actually provide learning, health and many benefits. As quoted from the article “A 2013 meta-analysis found out that playing shooter video games improved a players capacity to think about objects in three dimensions just as well as academic courses designed to enhance these same skills” (Bowen). Most studies and reports today have actually gone the distance as to connect any unrelated and horrible news to video games. Not to long ago the latest installment of Grand theft auto was released and the news reported its record breaking sales. At the same time the D.C. navy yard shooting had also gained a lot if attention. Many reporters hurried to uncover many…

There are so many things out there in today’s world that you would think would contribute to violence in our youth. There are violent television shows that depict characters as anti-heroes, books that depict killing as a way to save the planet or country or something of that nature. While all of those may have a contribution to our violent youth, they don’t measure up to what violent video games do in terms of causing violence in our youth. Jerald Block, a psychiatrist from Portland, Oregon even said that these shooters carried out their massacre because their parents took away their video games. Block said that the two relied heavily on online computer games as a means to express their anger. Eric Kain disagrees with Block, however, in his article “The Truth About Video Games and Gun Violence.” He says “that’s clearly an oversimplification. The age and gender of many mass shooters, including Columbine 's, places them right in the target demographic for first-person-shooter video games. And people between ages 18 and 25 also tend to report the highest rates of mental-health issues. Harris and Klebold 's complex mental-health problems have been well documented” (Kain, Works Cited #3). Kain’s argument resonates well with many others. One would agree that people seem to jump to conclusions when faced with horrific tragedies like this. They look at the first convincing piece of evidence without digging deep to really find out what happened. These two boys clearly had serious mental issues, but people were too fixated on the façade of violent video game obsession to find a viable reason why these two chose to do something like this. Mental illness is many times a huge factor when it comes to shootings like…

Some may say video games do promote violence and aggression and I’m here to say, you don’t know until you can prove it. Exposing children and adolescents to violent visual media increases the likelihood that they will engage in physical aggression against another person. A single brief exposure to violent media can increase aggression in the immediate situation. One short term affect is that general arousal increases, which tends to increase the dominant behavioral tendency. A long term affect is it decreases the cognitive accessibility of nonviolent ways to handle conflict.…
