During the forming stage, the team showed hard work ethic. Rules were put into place that all members agreed to keep. The rules mainly consisted of communicating any issues, and have the assignment done to be put together two days before the due date. Assignments were done with ease. The quality of work was excellent, and finished on time. As assignments started to get harder the team moved into the storming stage. A higher expectation was given with the assignments, as the assignment began to be more demanding. The team members had to plan in order to be on the same page with the assignments. Each member had great enthusiasm and ideas of what would be a great plan for the assignments. While different ideas came, the group had to agree on one plan. This put some of the team members on edge, because of the differences in ideas. The team struggled on a few assignments, but still got good grades. As this happened, the students went into the norming stage of development. All members of the group started to trust the other member’s ideas and became open to doing work in different ways. The cohesion of a social group is produced through the establishment of a set of group norms, which are later defined as a guide for conduct accepted within a group of individuals. However, in order for a group to perform and produce results, the team leader should guide his/her team through the proper stages of group development, which includes the following steps: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. I do my best to maintain a good rapport with my team members. I would say that they are comfortable approaching me if they need assistance. I encourage them to learn and accept new tasks assigned to them. I don’t stop to make everyone an in-group member in our unit. However, based from my observation, I will find few team members who are not motivated to excel themselves not because the leader isolates them from the in group members but because they prefer to be in the out-group situation. They choose to do less because they don’t want additional responsibilities. Nevertheless, I am a persistent charge nurse, I assign them new tasks to accomplish so they can benefit from the learning experience. To add to their confidence, I assured them with my presence and my willingness to help. It can be tough sometimes on my part because sometimes I end up spending a lot of coaching and monitoring them closely so they can be successful in completing their tasks. Almost three and a half years ago I was a new freshman cadet in NJROTC at San Ysidro High School. I started off at the bottom like any other cadet, but I was surprisingly the quiet one of all. Although I was new, I knew where I wanted to stand in the unit. I wanted to be more than what people knew me as, the quiet and shy girl who only joined the program because her brother is in it. Cadets knocked me down for months to the point where I wanted to quit and give up because I thought I lost all hope in myself. But ironically, that was the best part of all because I grew and learned from that experience, I wanted to prove all of them wrong. Working with others to achieve same goals is a challenging process. As an individual within a group of people, you need to make sure that you are using the best of them and avoiding their weaknesses. If I did not use good leadership skills, I would probably gain the negatives from the group work. In order to do so, I had to reflect on the leadership models I have learnt in the leadership course. At the beginning, I was really puzzled and not sure which model is the most effective to manage the group, reach the best of it, achieve my goal and not to struggle with my group. A team is defined by the method in which it functions, a disfunctional team can not accomplish a goal or will take more valuable time. Being able to be consisderate of others, and how they feel towards a subject is important to understand. When I am able to understand others, I can be direct, quick and productive. I try using operant conditioning in any group I partipicate, after learning of the method. It is different than using it with children, but I try to imagine how to use it with adults. I was put in groups for a week to work through a set of tasks. There was a mixture of males and females with a wide range of ages. There were some people that played a part in the group activities and there were some that did not, this was what contributed to the breakdown in communication in my group. The first day we got into groups, we had to do a learning styles questionnaire. In this questionnaire there were four types of learning styles, which where activists, reflectors, theorists and pragmatists (Honey, 1973). In my group of seven we were made up of reflectors, theorists and pragmatists. Even though we all pursuit for the good purpose we are all still different in the manner of communication and behavior. Within my team I had to anticipate the different educational level and social background of the companions when building the team.
