Describe How You Have Taken Advantage Of A Significant Educational Opportunity
1.Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

Throughout my high school years, I have taken 3 AP classes and 7 Honors classes. These classes have challenged me to push myself to strive for a good grade. Although I dislike Math, my interests in Medicine require knowledge in the subject so I challenge myself my taking the course in order to benefit me in the future. Classes like Pre-Calculus, Chemistry and Biology have helped me in understanding the basics to become a Physician. Since I struggled in Pre-Calculus I went after school almost everyday to learn and understand the concepts in class. I had to seize the opportunity once it was given to me

I have spent countless hours doing volunteer work to help my community and my school grow. Recently, I took part in a movement that helps fix up old playgrounds for children in the YMCA. For 7 hours I helped in building these students dream playground. Seeing the end result was all worth it, the hard work everyone had put in for these kids in the community inspired me to help even more than I already was. I was inspired by all these hard workers to provide more to my community. I participated in many community and beach cleanups to help the environment. Along with helping within my school I moved onto participating in Women’s Rights March and Protests within my community to overall create a better future. I played the role of helping as much as I could by taken the opportunities to volunteer whenever presented to me. I have also have been chosen for the board of two big clubs, Future Business Leaders of America and Red Cross in which I will bring in more opportunities for others to take in helping the community with their

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

Helping my community opened up a new side of me and showed me that helping out the people around me was something I enjoyed doing. I’ve volunteered at Rancho Elementary multiple times and will continue to do so over every chance I get as it makes me happy to help my community and see other people having fun. I was also a part of the Scripps Spelling Bee in 6th grade and after many days of hard work and effort, I placed 1st in the school and proceeded to place 2nd in all of…

Since middle school, I have been involved in numerous local beach and river cleanup events. In Nature Academy I was able to design my own community service project. During 7th grade, I banded together with a few fellow classmates and we decided to clean up the streets of Felton one staple at a time. The state of the poles there were horrible; covered in the metal pieces from prior flyers posted there. After several weeks and hours, we had defeated the evil staples. In 8th grade, I had done some more community service on a smaller scale. By helping out in the community garden at school, I had helped the crops grow, that were then disbursed to families in need of fresh…

The results of my hard work and the positive impact it creates on the people around me is a reward in itself. One of the most memorable instances in which I contributed to the greater good was during the summer of my freshman year where I volunteered at West Pines Community Church. That summer, myself and about 50 other volunteers set out to make an impactful difference in the…

I am highly concerned about giving back to my school and community at large. By helping out at church picnics and fundraisers, I learned to organize and focus on the task at hand. When I volunteered at the food bank, I was able to cooperate with others and be useful. While working with kids at Ralph Down, I was able to grow my communication skills and got more exposure to growing minds. These variety of ways have helped me excel in becoming a solid member of the community.…

I am a church member and musician at Revival Tabernacle. By being a musician, I find myself working with the talents and ideas of others as we come together on one accord and produce a skilled sound. I am also currently a student at Jones County High School. Being a student, I am a service to other organizations at school by being an usher for Graduation and also the Chorus Department. My recent involvement in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and DECA has enriched my knowledge of the business sector and how we all come together as a society and produce great ideas. In these organizations, I was able to be a holiday helper at local Nursing Homes to bring cheer to the residents. From my participation in these organizations and activities, I learned that it is better to give than receive. I was able to gain experience with dealing with the public and also give people a sense of comfort and love.…

Another example of helping my school community is setting up for Winter Formal. Key Club is a club that accumulates all of the values and ethics of service. As of this year, I have become a part of this organization. Now I like to sign up for as many volunteer opportunities as my time permits, and this club provides me with many of those. I have a lot of fun every time I contribute to these events and believe that these opportunities improve me as a person.…

As my community service, I helped out at a facility called Feed My Starving Children. While there, you make food for starving children throughout the world. I completed my community service for the Autism Speaks U 5K run/3K walk, which was located at Kendrick Park in downtown Amherst. The mission of this organization is to spread awareness and fund research for autism, and there are 4 pillars which are research, awareness, advocate, and family services. This organization serves children with autism who live anywhere in the nation and are the younger demographic, but can be any race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and group identity. I am different from the people served because I do not have autism, but I understand that it is a disorder that is not very well understood, so it is monumental to try to change that by finding causes and treatments for autism to help families of children suffering…

I have partaken in TI@ti, sophomore year and currently, which is an organization based on increasing leaderships skills and increasing awareness against drugs and alcohol. Last year, I guided peers to make healthier life choices and to take positive risks. I stepped up when my advisors, Ms. Ramirez and Mr. Rosenfeld (at the time) needed presenters for the PTSO meetings, Saturday Academy for 7th and 8th graders, and for 600+ seniors who attended prom last school year. The Saturday Academy was a huge leadership role where I had to advise seventh and eighth graders on what to expect from high school. I volunteer at various locations such as for the 9/11 Day of Service, Jersey Cares Day, and Paterson’s Operation clean up. In all of these services, I did landscaping because I felt as if the…

Through this organization, I was given the opportunity to lead by way of volunteerism and school involvement, participating in over twenty-five hours of community service. I was able to work with organizations like Feed the Children, packaging and loading boxes with supplies for Sandy Hurricane Relief workers, as well as Kaboom, NIKE, and the Absentee Shawnee Tribe in a community playground build for Little Axe youth. I also worked to pick up trash around my neighborhood on two occasions, completing a total of ten hours of community service. At school I emptied recycle boxes of teachers at least once every two weeks and worked in NHS sponsored events like our annual Pi…

My mom inspired me to do my volunteer work. We both agreed that it would be a good idea to get experience in the physical therapy field before I go to college. We made a phone call to the office and they said it would be a pleasure to have a volunteer in the clinic. The week that school got out for the year of 2013, I began to work in the clinic right away. I am grateful to my mom for motivating me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new because I have discovered great things along the way.…

Having the opportunity to make new, diverse friends around the community impacted me as a person. The people I met not only included the people I served, but also included the people I worked alongside of me in the food pantry. Since I volunteered at the same day and time every week, I was able to become familiar with many new people. In fact, many of these people were even able to connect to my life. One day I had a conversation with a man I volunteered with numerous times whose name was Steve.…
