In this assessment I am going to discuss the roles, qualities, and characteristics that make a good sports Leader. First I’m going to talk about four roles; Motivator, Friend, Role Model, and Manager.
Motivator - Maintain the motivation of all the athletes the whole year round.
A leader will have to be able to motivate their athlete(s), if a team is not motivated they will not push themselves to be the best or win. Motivation is used to help someone improve, a player will get better the more someone takes an interest in them.
Friend - Over the years of working with an athlete a personal relationship is built up where as well as giving coaching advice you also become someone, a friend …show more content…
who they can talk to about their problems or share their success with. It is important to keep personal information confidential because if you do not then all respect the athlete had for you as a friend and coach will be lost.
An athlete will get used to working with a leader and start to enjoy training for them, when a friendship is made an athlete will try to win for themselves and their coach. A player will start to enjoy going to training because they will see not just their coach, but their friend as well.
Role Model - A person who is looked up to as a model in a particular behavioural or social way for another person to copy. The way you conduct yourself whilst in the company of your athletes provides an example of how they should act.
Someone will pick a role model that is doing or has done very well in their career, or if the person is very good at the sport they do or train. So if a player is getting coached by their role model, they will try harder to impress them and be more like them.
Manager - a person who has control or direction of a player or a team.
If a coach is not very good at controlling their athlete or team, then he’s not a very good manger. A good manager is someone that can have a laugh with their team, but be strict with them as well to make sure they are improving at a high rate. A manger should keep a player going in the right direction aiming to be the best.
Now I’m going to discuss four qualities and four characteristics of two well-known sport leaders; José Mourinho and John Terry, I will talk about José Mourinho’s qualities first.
Communication – José Mourinho is able to communicate with a player, so they fully understand what they have been told. Feedback is communicating with a player, an athlete will only be able to improve if the feedback they receive is clear and understandable, and a good leader should be very good at this. The main ways a leader can communicate are: * Verbal * non-verbal * listening * demonstration * assisting
José is very good at all of these.
Observant and discerning – A good manager is quick to notice things, they should be alert at all times to pick out things there athlete is to do better or is doing well to congratulate them on. José shows a fantastic understanding for football and is very good at picking out good players, and judging whether they are good enough for his team.
Trustworthy – A trustworthy person is someone that is reliable, somebody that you could tell something to with full confidence. A manager should be trustworthy, if an athlete can trust a leader than their friendship will be stronger. Mourinho is a very well-liked person, and he gains the trust of all his players.
Gives feedback effectively – Without clear feedback an athlete will not be able to improve because the manager did explain in detail. The leader needs to be very specific and descriptive, and will need to focus on behaviours. Mourinho is very good at this, and that’s how he helps his players improve.
Now I will discuss José Mourinho’s characteristics that make him a good sports leader.
Good Appearance – A good sports leader must present himself well, otherwise an athlete will not look up to him as a model. If a leader cannot get the attention of his team their performance will not be very good. An athlete’s role model will not be based on their ability to play/coach their sport, but to also have a good appearance. Mourinho is always seen looking good, for example wearing suits and smart shoes to match days, and wearing tracksuits and football boots to training. Telling his players that at match days it’s their time to shine and at training sessions it’s his.
Confidence – A coach must have confidence, confidence in the way he teaches his athletes and the way his team performs. This will give their athletes confidence in themselves, making them believe that they can win or get a personal best. Mourinho has a lot confidence, which shines onto his football teams making them improve massively. His confidence is what has made him a very good manager today, Mourinho’s confidence makes him ambitious.
Ambitious – For a leader/manager to do well in there career they have to have ambition, to take risks with their athletes. They need to want something so much that they keep trying to achieve their goal/success. José Mourinho has tried throughout his coaching career to be the best and he has managed some of the best teams in the world, Chelsea, Internazionale (Inter Milan), and Real Madrid who he is coaching to this present day.
Motivating - A leader will have to be able to motivate their athlete(s), if a team is not motivated they will not push themselves to be the best or win. Motivation is used to help someone improve, a player will get better the more someone takes an interest in them. Motivation actually means maintaining the motivation of all your athletes the whole year round. Mourinho is a fantastic motivator, and raises morale with a single speech.
Now I am going to discuss four qualities and four characteristics which make John terry stand out for being a good leader.
Communication – John Terry is able to communicate with his fellow players, so they fully understand what they have been told. Feedback is communicating with a player, an athlete will only be able to improve if the feedback they receive is clear and understandable, and a good leader should be very good at this. The main ways a leader can communicate are: * Verbal * non-verbal * listening * demonstration * assisting
Terry is very good at all of these. A captain has to be able to talk to his players, to let them know what they have to do or have done. He also needs motivate them and the way to do this is through communication.
Knowledge of sport skills – A sport leader must have knowledge of sports skills, to teach others those skills and to be able to play and be good at their sport. As a captain John Terry has a role to help his team mates improve and learn, so he must have that knowledge to share.
Knowledge of sport rules – A captain must know the rules of the sport, so they abide by them and leads by example.
If a captain shows that he knows the rules of the sport his team mates will, learner quicker and decide to learn them himself.
Knowledge of sport laws - A captain must know the laws of their sport, so they abide by them and leads by example. When John terry shows that he knows the laws of the game, and does not do anything silly so he gets punished. His players will take notice of this and they will not misbehave either.
Now I will discuss John Terry’s characteristics that make him a good sports leader.
Good Appearance – A good sports leader must present himself well, otherwise an athlete will not look up to him as a model. If a leader cannot get the attention of his team their performance will not be very good. An athlete’s role model will not just be based on their ability to play/coach their sport, but to also have a good appearance.
Confidence – A coach must have confidence, confidence in the way he teaches his athletes and the way his team performs. This will give their athletes confidence in themselves, making them believe that they can win or get a personal best. John Terry has a lot confidence, which shines onto his football team making them improve massively. His confidence is what has made him a very successful captain today, Terry’s confidence makes him
ambitious.
Ambitious – For a leader/manager to do well in there career they have to have ambition, to take risks with their athletes. They need to want something so much that they keep trying to achieve their goal/success.
